Version 1.0.5rc1 von NewsFox wurde released - Achtung: Release Candidate, läuft aber bei mir stabil und ohne Probleme.

Hier die Release Notes:

* Relative references allowed for NewsFox folder
The folder for NewsFox has been hard coded which creates an annoyance, but not lack of functionality, when using portable Firefox. The annoyance being that the new directory needs to be chosen each time, and in fact if the newsfox directory is not carefully chosen so that it doesn't exist as a non-NewsFox folder on other machines, there could be problems running NewsFox. This version allows relative filenames such as ../../newsfox (. is the current directory and .. is the parent directory) and uses a default of ./ where .=the newsfox folder contained in the profile folder. Hence if you use ./, there should be no problems with portable Firefox. Existing users may wish to change their NewsFox folder to use a relative reference, either in Options > General tab > NewsFox directory or by setting newsfox.global.directory equal to './'. Equivalently, the about:config preference newsfox.global.directory can be reset(removed), which will cause the default to be used.

* Expanded search option dialog if search is not over all feeds (bug#20506)
It is now easier to set a search over a collection of feeds that is not a regular group. See the bug for more information.

* Blank source or XHTML in source
Now if a source is set in a feed and it has a blank name, NewsFox uses .... Also if XHTML is in the source name, NewsFox processes it correctly.

* Sound for new articles (bug#20218)
For sound notification set newsfox.global.notifyUponNewSound equal to true. If the file NFsound.wav exists in the profile directory, it will be played when there are new articles. If the file NFsound.wav does not exist, the system beep will be played.

Bereits am Montag wurde Version 1.0.4.2 von NewsFox released, hier das recht kurze Changelog:

Das Update ist nur über http://newsfox.mozdev.org zu beziehen und nicht über die Auto-Update Funktion. Warum das so ist, entzieht sich meiner Kenntnis.

Kurzer Auszug aus dem Changelog:

The method of keeping track of whether to delete old articles changed in NewsFox 1.0.4. Unfortunately, the updater was incorrect. Feeds that were marked not to delete old articles became feeds that would delete old articles including unread articles. So avoid NewsFox 1.0.4 if possible. If you have installed 1.0.4, check your feed settings. This is the only change between 1.0.4 and 1.0.4.1.

Das Update kommt wie gewohnt automatisch.

Eigentlich wäre das Update eines Firefox AddOns nicht der Rede wert, passiert ja i.d.R. sowieso automatisch - mit Version 1.0.4 meines bevorzugten Feedreades NewsFox hat aber eine Einstellmöglichkeit Einzug gehalten, die ich bisher schmerzlich vermisst habe: Das Einstellen eines globales Aktualisierungsintervalls.

Bisher konnte bzw. _musste_ man die automatische Aktualisierung pro Feed einzeln einstellen, was ab einer gewissen Anzahl an Feeds dann doch unkomfortabel ist. Version 1.0.4 bietet dafür nun eine globale Einstellung.

Bisher vorgenommene Einstellungen an den Feeds werden damit überschrieben, wahlweise kann jeder Feed aber auch einzeln eingestellt werden.

Damit ist der einzige Kritikpunkt, den ich bisher an NewsFox hatte, nun auch verschwunden. Happy Feedreading! ;-)

Nach langer Suche und Experimenten mit etlichen Feedreadern nutze ich seit einigen Monaten den NewsFox - man kann es am Namen schon erahnen, es handelt sich hierbei um eine Erweiterung für den Firefox.

Allen Mozilla-affinen Lesern ist der NewsFox wahrscheinlich schon ein Begriff, ich muss aber gestehen, das im Wirr-Warr der z.B. via google auffindbaren Feedreader der NewsFox doch deutlich untergeht. Daher findet er nun hier seine (imho verdiente) Erwähnung.
